It was tragic that Surendra has to lose his life at Gandhi Bhavan while protesting for Re-categorization of Scheduled Castes (SC)s.
My deep condolences towards the bereaved family.
Seeing the series of events unfolding in the recent days, I want to ask one question-
why do we need further categorization of SCs? Was there any benefit of the Reservations?
I feel that yes. The reservations helped the backward classes to get education, jobs in all the government organizations, seats in all the educational institutions with nominal or no fee, Reservations improved their financial and social status though there are still some isolated cases of discrimination and violence against the SCs ans STs.
This is only the short term benefit.
But did our competency improve? NO. A lion will forget hunting if it has the food at his disposal. A lion which never hunts is no lion. Similarly the sharpness of our brains or the zeal to fight is lost and this is what we give to our future generations.
In the event of Globalization and booming IT industry and other private sectors and the dwindling Government jobs, the Merit is the key. Did the Reservations prepare us for these new challenges?
Absolutely No. We cannot ask a private firm for reserving some seats to the so called backward classes.
So lets not waste our time further dividing ourselves, and work hard for the share of happiness we deserve.
